What Is Applied Behaviour Analysis?

Applied Behaviour Analysis, commonly called ABA, is a professional
discipline that uses established principles of learning and behaviour
to understand how a person’s environment, experiences and skills may
influence their actions and participation.

ABA services begin by learning about the individual’s strengths,
preferences, communication, environment and support needs. Meaningful
goals are developed collaboratively with the individual and, when
appropriate, their parent, guardian, caregiver and other authorized
professionals.

Depending on the individual plan, ABA may support communication,
participation in daily routines, independence, safety, emotional and
behavioural regulation, social participation, learning readiness and
other functional skills that matter to the individual and family.

HolistiCare’s ABA services are overseen by an Ontario Registered
Behaviour Analyst. Assessment, recommendations, supervision,
documentation and service delivery are completed within applicable
professional standards and each team member’s authorized role.

Who We Serve

HolistiCare provides individualized ABA services for children and youth whose needs may relate to communication, daily living, safety, learning, participation, independence or behaviours that affect their quality of life.

Services may be appropriate for:

  • Autistic children and youth
  • Individuals with developmental or learning differences
  • Individuals who need support developing functional communication, daily-living or participation skills
  • Families seeking help with behaviours that may create safety, learning or quality-of-life concerns
  • Parents and caregivers seeking practical strategies that are consistent with an individualized ABA plan

An autism diagnosis may be required for certain Ontario Autism Program funding pathways but is not automatically required to submit a private-service inquiry. Service suitability, goals, format, location and required support are reviewed individually before services are offered.

Centre-based services are available in Ottawa. Families elsewhere in Ontario may submit an inquiry regarding possible home, school, community or virtual options. Availability depends on clinical suitability, qualified staffing, scheduling and location.

Our ABA Service Options

Centre-Based ABA

Individual and small-group ABA services may be delivered at HolistiCare’s Ottawa centre. The structured environment supports individualized teaching, observation, skill practice and carefully planned opportunities for participation with others. The recommended format and level of support are determined through assessment and ongoing clinical review.

Home & Community-Based ABA

ABA services may be delivered in the individual’s home or community when these settings are clinically appropriate and qualified professionals are available. Working in everyday environments can support functional routines, independence, communication, safety and the use of skills across relevant situations.

School & Educational Collaboration

With appropriate authorization and agreement from the school or educational setting, HolistiCare may collaborate with families, educators and other authorized professionals to support consistent strategies and participation goals. School involvement is confirmed individually and does not replace services or responsibilities provided by the school board.

Using OAP Funding for ABA Services

Applied Behaviour Analysis is an eligible service category under the Ontario Autism Program’s core clinical services and supports guidelines. Families with an applicable OAP funding allocation may be able to use that funding for eligible ABA services delivered or overseen by a qualified professional.

HolistiCare’s clinical supervisor is an Ontario Registered Behaviour Analyst and is listed on the Ontario Autism Program Provider List. This listing applies to the individual professional and must not be interpreted as government approval of HolistiCare or a guarantee that every service, provider, fee or invoice will be eligible for reimbursement.

Funding eligibility depends on the family’s OAP funding pathway, the service delivered, professional qualifications, required documentation and the rules applicable to the family’s allocation. Families should confirm eligible expenses with AccessOAP or their care coordinator before purchasing services.
