HolistiCare accepts inquiries for individualized speech-language pathology services that may support speech, language, communication, social communication, fluency, voice, augmentative and alternative communication and related functional goals.

When an assignment is accepted, assessment, treatment, consultation and professional recommendations are provided by a speech-language pathologist registered and in good standing with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.

Families may submit inquiries from Ottawa and other Ontario communities. Service location, delivery format and availability are confirmed according to clinical suitability, qualified professional capacity, scheduling and location.

What Is Speech-Language Pathology?

At HolistiCare, families may inquire about speech-language pathology services designed to support communication and related functional needs. Depending on the individual’s assessed needs, this may involve speech production, understanding and using language, social communication, fluency, voice, cognitive communication or augmentative and alternative communication.

When a speech-language pathology assignment is accepted, assessment, treatment, consultation and professional recommendations are provided by a speech-language pathologist registered and in good standing with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.

The speech-language pathologist determines the appropriate assessment process based on the referral question, the individual’s communication needs, available information and professional judgment. Assessment may include discussion, observation, appropriate formal or informal tools and review of relevant records.

Based on the assessment, services may include direct intervention, communication strategies, caregiver consultation, recommendations for communication supports, AAC-related support or authorized collaboration with educators and other professionals.

Feeding or swallowing assessment and treatment may fall within speech-language pathology practice but must only be offered when an appropriately qualified speech-language pathologist has accepted the assignment and determined that the service is within their competence.

Speech-language pathology is individualized healthcare. Recommendations depend on assessment, informed consent, professional judgment and the individual’s priorities. Availability and specific outcomes are not guaranteed.

Who We Serve

HolistiCare accepts speech-language pathology inquiries for children and youth whose communication or related functional needs may affect participation at home, at school or in the community.

An inquiry may be appropriate for:

  • Autistic and neurodivergent children and youth
  • Children with speech-sound differences or reduced intelligibility
  • Individuals who have difficulty understanding or using language
  • Nonspeaking or minimally speaking individuals
  • Individuals who may benefit from augmentative and alternative communication
  • Children experiencing differences in social or functional communication
  • Individuals who stutter or have other fluency-related needs
  • Children with voice or resonance concerns
  • Individuals with cognitive-communication needs
  • Families seeking communication strategies or professional consultation

A diagnosis is not automatically required to submit a private-service inquiry. Certain funding programs, insurers or service pathways may require a diagnosis, referral, prescription, assessment or other supporting documentation.

A speech-language pathologist must review the available information and determine whether speech-language pathology is appropriate, whether further assessment is required and whether HolistiCare has suitable professional capacity for the requested service. Speech-Language Pathology Service Options

Speech & Language Assessment

A speech-language pathologist may gather information through discussion, observation, review of relevant records and appropriate formal or informal assessment tools. The assessment process is selected according to the referral question, communication needs and the speech-language pathologist’s professional judgment.

Individual Speech-Language Intervention

When recommended and accepted, individual sessions may address goals related to speech production, language, social communication, fluency, voice, cognitive communication or functional participation. Goals, methods, frequency and delivery format are determined by the speech-language pathologist and documented in the service plan.

AAC Assessment & Support

A speech-language pathologist may assess communication needs and consider augmentative and alternative communication strategies, systems or tools when appropriate. AAC recommendations are individualized and may involve trials, implementation planning, caregiver consultation and coordination with other authorized professionals.

Caregiver, School & Professional Collaboration

With appropriate consent and authorization, the speech-language pathologist may collaborate with parents, caregivers, educators and other professionals to support consistent communication strategies across relevant environments. Collaboration does not replace services or responsibilities provided by a school board or another organization.

Different funding and payment pathways may apply to speech-language pathology. Eligibility and reimbursement requirements must be confirmed before services are purchased.

Eligible Category

Ontario Autism Program

Speech-language pathology is included as an eligible service category under the Ontario Autism Program’s core clinical services and supports guidelines.

Families with an applicable OAP funding allocation may be able to use that funding for eligible speech-language pathology services provided by a qualified professional.

Eligibility depends on the family’s funding pathway, the service delivered, professional qualifications, supervision arrangements and required documentation. Families should confirm expenses with AccessOAP or their care coordinator.

Coverage May Apply

Private Health Insurance

Some extended health insurance plans provide coverage for speech-language pathology services delivered by a speech-language pathologist registered in Ontario.

Coverage limits, referral or prescription requirements, eligible services and documentation requirements vary by policy. Families are responsible for confirming coverage directly with their insurer.

HolistiCare cannot guarantee that an insurer will approve or reimburse an invoice.

Private Payment

Private Pay

Families may purchase accepted speech-language pathology services privately when funding or insurance is unavailable or does not cover the full cost.

Fees, payment terms, cancellation requirements and included services are confirmed before services begin and documented in the applicable service agreement.

Clinical SLP Not Eligible

SSAH Funding

Assessment and hands-on speech-language therapy are not eligible expenses under Ontario’s Special Services at Home program because SSAH does not fund clinical therapies supported through other government programs.

Other non-clinical communication supports or materials may have different eligibility rules. Families must confirm those expenses directly with their SSAH representative before making a purchase.

Individualized Assessment

The Speech-Language Pathologist considers the individual’s communication strengths, needs, priorities and everyday environments before recommending goals or services.

Progress Review and Documentation

Progress is monitored and documented using appropriate clinical methods. Goals and recommendations may be adjusted based on professional judgment, the individual’s response and changing needs.

Functional Communication Goals

Services focus on practical communication goals that are meaningful to the individual and relevant to participation at home, school and in the community.

Informed Consent

The proposed services, potential benefits, limitations, alternatives and applicable fees are explained before services begin. Consent may be withdrawn in accordance with applicable requirements.

Authorized Collaboration

With appropriate consent, the Speech-Language Pathologist may collaborate with caregivers, educators and other authorized professionals to support coordinated care.
